11/28/2023 0 Comments Vacation simulator sandcastle guideYes, size matters – at least in the game of sandcastles. The sand at Bridlington or Great Yarmouth tells a tale of giant ice sheets and drowned lands below the North Sea. The red sand of Torquay once blew in giant sandstorms, as the area was once part of a desert far greater than that of the Sahara. Each grain is a fragment of rock and contains a story of relict mountains, ancient rivers, dinosaur-infested swamps and seas, of past climates and events which tell the amazing story of our planet. A single bucket can be turned out several times to create a large mound from which you carve an amazing tower.Īs you build, spare a thought to the story, not just of the castle one is building with its tales of derring-do, but also the story of the sand itself. A round bucket will allow you turn out countless towers and architectural features. The best buckets are the simple round ones – not the ones with the fancy turrets which when turned out produce a castle in itself. The bucket also has to be the perfect size and shape. A selection of tools will keep the workforce in harmony. Adult helpers find the smallest spade nothing but frustrating, and while young assistants might aspire to use the biggest spade, it is often too big to handle. In my experience there is a direct correlation between the age of the builder, spade size and the speed at which boredom sets in. My next tip refers to quality of your tools. ![]() But remember that this will change as the tide comes and goes during the day. ![]() So assuming that you don’t have any science gear with you, then you are looking for a spot close to the high tide line – usually marked by a line of seaweed and flotsam – and the low tide line where sand is still visibly wet and the waves are close. Or if you want the magic formula: Water = 0.125 x Sand. Now the experimentation we did suggested that the perfect sandcastle requires one bucket of water to eight buckets of dry sand. The film of water between individual sand grains is what gives sand its strength, too much and it lubricates one grain over the other, but just right and it binds them strong. It’s all down to the surface tension of water – the thing that gives the “meniscus”, or skin, to a glass of water and holds down that glass when placed on a wet bar top. You need to get it just right and your castle will stand proud and last. Too much water and your sand will flow, too little and it will crumble. The finer the grains the more they hold the water. Microscopic shell fragments work well in this regard. The more a grain is transported the more rounded it becomes. The more angular the grains, the better they will lock together. The strength of sand depends on the properties of its individual grains and on the water between them. Now a castle should be a symbol of military strength, but to stand proud one needs strong sand. Others yet might hanker after the secluded fringes of the beach, perhaps sheltered by natural promontories of rock that keep the biting wind at bay. Some might prefer a spot close to the car park with easy access when the rain arrives while others might want to stay next to a cafe. Now this is a question of taste rather than hard rules. ![]() Having selected a beach one has to find the perfect spot. Though in truth any sandy beach will do, Torquay came out top with its delightful red sand, closely followed by Bridlington, with Bournemouth, Great Yarmouth and Tenby tied in third. To find out, I compared the sand from the ten most popular beaches in the UK at the time. As a sedimentologist, someone who studies fragments of rock, I began pondering what kind of beach would work best for castle building. ![]() It all started back in 2004, when a holiday company asked us to investigate the question. But what’s the secret to building a majestic sandcastle that will withstand the tide of time? Luckily, there’s a scientific formula for that. Whether we prefer water sports or relaxing with a good book, the humble sandcastle is often a seaside must. That’s just the official tally-the likely death toll is higher. Well over 500 wolves have been killed in these states alone since last spring, out of a total population of around 2,600, according to government figures. Moreover, in 2021, Idaho and Montana enacted laws to remove most restrictions on wolf hunting. Those animals will continue to be managed by the states and not the federal government. ![]() This is most relevant for the Great Lakes states, including Wisconsin, which authorized a controversial wolf hunt in February 2021 that killed 218 wolves in under three days.īut owing to previous legislation that wasn’t at issue in the current lawsuit, the ruling does not apply to wolves in the Northern Rockies, which includes Idaho, Montana, most of Wyoming, as well as parts of eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and northern Utah. “It’s a good day for science, for wolves, for ecosystems, and for the people who value wolves,” says Adrian Treves, a wolf researcher and professor of environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin.įor instance, the court decision means that most forms of wolf-killing, such as hunting or trapping, will be illegal outside the Northern Rockies. Conservationists, scientists, and even some hunters have cheered the decision, with something of an asterisk. ![]() The new ruling amounts to a thorough and sweeping rebuke of the wildlife agency’s policy on gray wolves, experts say. This delisting decision has been upheld-and defended in court-by the Biden Administration. That decision, which went into effect in October 2020 toward the end of the Trump Administration, removed federal protections for the animals, arguing they had recovered within substantial parts of their range. Fish and Wildlife Service acted improperly in delisting wolves. The court ordered that the reintroduced wolves be allowed to stay in the recovery areas. On January 13, 2000, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals delivered a major blow to the farm bureau federations involved in the litigation by holding that the Recovery Plan was conducted in full compliance with section lOW. The major allegation of the farm bureau federations is that the Recovery Plan, as implemented, violated section 1O(j), and these organizations want the reintroduced wolves removed. The Recovery Plan has since been the subject of intense litigation by ranching groups over the last several years. Under the Recovery Plan, and pursuant to section 10(j) of the Endangered species Act, Canadian gray wolves were captured and released into Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho. ![]() In 1995, the Department of the Interior and the United States Fish and Wild-life Service implemented the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf Recovery Plan (Recovery Plan), which was designed to bolster the endangered wolf population. The gray wolf has been listed as an endangered species since 1973. 11/28/2023 0 Comments Arctic fox sounds![]() In greeting, wolves may cluck at each other. Gekkering is a series of guttural sounds that are low in volume, and these can be mixed with the occasional howl or yelp.Īdult foxes gekker when they are defending their territory, while baby foxes gekker when they play with their siblings. When a vixen snarls or yelps, she is rebuffing mating attempts from an amorous male fox. This scream is one of aggression and to prevent any invasion of their turf. It is part of how foxes socially interact with each other.įoxes also scream to protect their young, especially if there is an intruder that wants to invade their lair. People think that a fox screams because it is in pain or scared, but these animals live alone and scream to contact other foxes. ![]() When a fox screams, they scream in sets, and this is repeated in intervals of 3-10 seconds. However, these screams are described differently depending on who hears them.Įveryone agrees that these screams are high-pitched, deafening, and scary. The most common sound you’ll associate with a fox is a scream. Some people mistake these wolf barks that are a contact call like an owl hooting. These barks aren’t quite like a dog’s bark instead, it is a high yip, but it does sound like a wow-wow-wow. Thus, whimpering is used to get their parents’ attention.įoxes either bark in surprise or warning to let their den know that something is wrong. Pups usually whimper to let their parents know they need attention or are cold or hungry. When a fox whines or whimpers, it is usually in submission. Whimpers and whines are soft vocalizations and whimpers are often used to soothe.įor example, a vixen can whimper at her pups to let them know everything is okay or to keep them quiet. ![]() Pups, kits, or cubs (baby foxes) are known to growl at their siblings when they are “play” fighting, but when a parent growls, it is a warning.Ī whine and a whimper aren’t aggressive sounds. This lets the predator know the fox is ready to fight. When foxes growl at each other, they are ready to fight over a female fox.Ī fox also growls when they want to fight over territory.Ī fox will also growl at a predator and when moving into a defensive position. The triple bark vocalization is mostly made by male foxes when they proclaim their territory.Ī growl is a low-pitched, guttural sound that can only be heard if you are close to a fox. This scream is to warn other rival male foxes not to approach its mate. When a male fox screams, it is short and explosive. It’s usually the vixen (female fox) that emits a high-pitched howl (or scream, depending on whom you ask), and the male answers this call to mate with a bark. 11/28/2023 0 Comments Acronis true image wd edition sotware

People are not smart shoppers or rational spenders when it comes to health care. Further, those at higher risk of a heart attack or stroke were more likely to cancel their prescriptions than people at lower risk. In fact, they were considered “high value” drugs because they were proven to save lives. ![]() This finding was for drugs that treat cholesterol and high blood pressure. These seniors weren’t taking optional, esoteric, exceptionally expensive medications. In other words, making seniors pay $10 more per prescription led to people dying. Worse, they said it led to an almost 33 percent increase in monthly mortality. The researchers claimed, however, that a simple $10 increase in cost-sharing, which many would consider a small amount of money, led to about a 23 percent decrease in drug consumption. Remember, people age 65 and older in the United States are insured with what most consider to be rather comprehensive coverage: Medicare. In a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper published last year, researchers looked at how increases in cost-sharing affected how older adults, who are more likely to need care, pay for and use drugs. They treat all patients the same, and they assume that all patients should be treated the same way. Making that the time when people are most discouraged from getting care doesn’t make sense.Ĭo-pays and co-insurance aren’t much better. We were in an Omicron surge at the beginning of this year. ![]() There is no valid argument for why that should be. The use of deductibles assumes that all medical spending is the same and that the system should disincentivize all of it, starting over each Jan. Instead, extra costs result in patients not seeking any care, even if they need it.Ĭost-sharing isn’t set up in a thoughtful way such that it might steer people away from inefficient care toward efficient care. But this moral-hazard argument assumes that patients are rational consumers, and it assumes that cost-sharing in the form of deductibles and co-pays makes them better shoppers. Out-of-pocket expenses exist for a reason people are less likely to spend their own money than an insurance company’s money, and these expenses are supposed to make patients stop and think before they get needless care. Unfortunately, it has not done enough to protect people from rising out-of-pocket expenses in the form of deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance. It reduced the number of Americans who were uninsured through the Medicaid expansion and the creation of the health insurance marketplaces. The Affordable Care Act was supposed to improve access to health insurance, and it did. More often, it’s because they’re underinsured. And about a quarter of American adults with this debt owe more than $5,000. More than 100 million Americans have medical debt, according to a recent Kaiser Health News-NPR investigation. 11/27/2023 0 Comments Like a dragon ishin release date 2023![]() Except, as noted, transplanted into the late Edo period samurai world. I was reasonably impressed – it looked and felt like a classic late PS3 / early PS4 Yakuza game. So, I was curious as to how the original would compare to the new release and in preparation I played for about 4 ½ hours, taking me to early chapter two. This was probably enough to put me off until I had more motivation to play. While my Japanese is sufficient to be able to understand enough to play the game, I am not a fluent speaker and it does make things slower and more difficult – especially when trying to understand chunks of text with no voice acting. I’ve actually had the original PS3 龍が如く維新 in my backlog for a couple of years but had never got round to playing it for. And, that’s exactly what it is, for better and for worse. It looks and feels like a PS3 game with high quality assets pasted on top. It’s utterly obviously a remaster of a now almost ten year old game. This kind of leads into my other main gripe about the game. Indeed the Ishin of the title, 維新, refers to the Ishin Shishi, a group of political activists, the more extreme members of which were very much anti Bakufu, pro imperial and worked to overthrow the ruling Tokugawa clan. Japanese children learn this stuff at school so for a Japanese release it probably wasn’t that necessary but for a global one? I think Sega could have done more setting and explaining the historical scene of Ishin. As noted we are introduced to a loyalist group and later on we meet the Shinsengumi, a military group who were a special police arm of the Bakufu charged with maintaining order on the streets of the capital city, Kyoto. The two ringleaders of this opposition were from Satsuma and Choshu provinces which are mentioned in the game and the term “loyalist” is used for factions / individuals who support the restoration of the Emperor.Īpologies for the history lesson but I think the historical context of the game is important and immediately leads me to one criticism I have of Ishin – it doesn’t really do a good job of explaining the political machinations at work early in the game. The might, and right to rule, of the Bakufu was being genuinely challenged, notably by factions who wanted to restore the Emperor to the status of de facto ruler, not a mere figurehead. So, by the time we reach the 1860s and the time that Ishin takes place, Japan is in the midst of great economical and political turmoil. The USA throwing its military weight around to bully other countries, that doesn’t sound familiar at all… This in turn lead to a series of trade and diplomatic treaties being imposed on Japan – mostly to the nation’s detriment and America’s benefit. This came to a head in 1853 / 1854 when American ships, lead by Commodore Matthew Perry, sailed into Tokyo Bay and forced Japan to interact with them – at gunpoint. By the 19th century Japan was struggling to maintain this isolation as Western nations showed more and more interest in trading with Japan and establishing relations. Tokugawa Ieyasu was a hugely important character in Japanese history – in the early 17th century he unified Japan and established the Tokugawa Bakufu which would rule for the Edo period, implementing a strict isolationist edict to Japan’s foreign policy from the middle of the 17th century. The Bakufu had ruled for many centuries – although the emperor remained the nominal ruler of the country, he was in reality a puppet and the real power lay with the shogun. The Bakumatsu was the final years of the Bakufu government, the military rule of the shoguns. ![]() Ishin is a spin off from the mainline Yakuza series, taking place in the 1860s Bakumatsu period at the end of the Edo era in Japanese history. Like A Dragon: Ishin is a remaster of the original game, localising it for a global audience and bringing it to modern platforms. It never saw a Western release, despite great fan demand for it – until now. Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin was originally released only in Japan in 2014 on PS3 and PS4. Eagle eyed readers will spot that Ryu Ga Gotoku is also the name of the studio itself that produces the games. I’ll be referring to the historic titles in the series as Yakzua however. ![]() Known as 龍が如く (Ryu Ga Gotoku which translates to “Like A Dragon”) in Japan since its inception, Sega have finally decided to align the nomenclature of the Japanese and global releases.
